Daughtry’s expert cliche explaining

Chris DaughtryI heard the old Daughtry single on the radio today, and it reminded me of this list Nadia and I came up w/ last summer. McSweeneys.net later rejected it, so this here’s a CSP exclusive.–ST

ALTERNATE LYRICS FOR DAUGHTRY‘S HIT SINGLE “HOME,” THE ORIGINAL LYRICS TO WHICH OFFER THE FOLLOWING INSIGHT: “BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR / ‘CAUSE YOU JUST MIGHT GET IT ALL / AND THEN SOME YOU DON’T WANT”

With friends like these, who needs enemies? / ‘Cause these friends are doing pretty well as enemies / Though not so well, now that I think about it, as FRIENDS

The perfect is the enemy of the good / Which is a shame, ’cause the good’s pretty good / It just isn’t perfect, quite

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater / ‘Cause only the water’s dirty and useless / The freshly bathed baby is perfectly clean—and IT’S A BABY

That’s the way the cookie crumbles / It’s hard to make it crumble some other way / Much less to put it back together

You can’t see the forest for the trees / An odd phenomenon, since the forest is MADE of trees / But it’s also its own, separate, primarily green entity

Dead men tell no tales / ‘Cause they’re dead and, thus, can’t talk / Good reason to kill someone who knows a damaging secret about you, actually

He knows where his bread is buttered / So he shouldn’t do anything to threaten this bread-buttering place / Unless he knows of some other, equally convenient place at which to get his bread buttered, or he’s developed a taste for unbuttered bread

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones / ‘Cause whomever the stones were thrown at is liable to pick them up—or find others—and throw them back / The stones will likely break the glass house’s glass walls, getting broken glass all over the floors, which presumably are made of glass as well

You’ve made your bed; now you must lie in it / Though I suppose you could always remake it some other way / Or just skip the nap and go for a walk instead

UCB on the Obama effect

Has Meghan secretly been writing sketches for the Upright Citizens Brigade? I thought she was busy writing theological research papers, but there’s no denying that this is her handiwork…

Meh Joke Monday

Let’s get local for a minute. There were crazy winds in north Florida and southern Georgia this weekend. There were even reports of tornados. Crazy stuff. Now, I’ve never seen a tornado, but I hear they’re pretty intense.

I’m sure if I ever did see one, I’d be blown away. Meh.

Yes…my life is THAT bad right now, seeing as that’s the best I could come up with. The only thing I have to look forward to this week is the first episode of the new season of American Gladiators debuting tonight. Sad really.

Best job a goat could hope for

The New York Times reports that The Getty, Los Angeles’ literal ivory tower of art and culture (with free admission!), has employed 60 goats to keep the brush on it’s expansive hillsides trim and thus safe from wildfires. Having visited the Getty once, I must say that I’m slightly envious of these goats- The Getty is pretty awesome.

One more reason for the University of Chicago to be proud

Those smarty-pants down in Hyde Park have one more illustrious alumnus to look up to as a role model. Jack Jordan (Class of 1994) was convicted today of stalking Uma Thurman. I do feel sympathy for Mr. Jordan as it seems he’s been done in by his own overactive mind. On the stand he was quite verbose, even applying critical theory to drawings of stick figures with razor blades and open graves that he gave to Ms. Thurman on the set of “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.” Let this be an instructive tale for all those U of C Phoenixes with their heads in the clouds- keep it real or you could wind up like this guy (or worse, Leopold and Loeb)!

Andrew Bird, aka Dr Stringz

Not having children or cable, I’ve never watched the Noggin network. However, my friend Steev has both and brought this performance to my attention. I’m not sure which is a higher achievement for Mr. Bird- blogging for the NY Times or this.

Literal cheap shots

This site is at the forefront of the “photobombing” movement. While this sort of prank is totally juvenile and I probably wouldn’t want to be friends with most of these pranksters, I have to admit that this is one of the most literal examples of a cheap shot, thus I must begrudgingly grant provisional CSP membership to these fools. I guess I’ll just have to hope that naming this activity will give its practitioners a new sense of purpose and they’ll use this skill for the greater good.

My first night as a paparazzo

A few weeks ago I was recruited to act as paparazzi for my friend’s comedy show. The idea was that the dive bar venue had been re-opened as a themed club. The punchline is that the new club is exactly the same as it was before. Enjoy- listen close for my Death Cab for Cutie “joke.”

The first prototype of the T1000

Ok, so this video is really pretty boring and nerdy, but anyone who’s seen Terminator 2 should feel a shudder of dread watching this robot reconstruct itself after being knocked apart. The only reason I’ll be able to sleep tonight is knowing it falls over on its own at the very end of the video.

Another Sufjan Stevens exclusive video premiere

Here’s another rare example of Sufjan doing a cover song. In this case, its REM’s “The One I Love” from the same concert at Schubas four years ago.
